Carefully crafted for hardcore alpine athletes and skiers who take to remote backcountry terrain in helicopters and snowshoes, the stable and predictable Apache Coomba powder ski is the product of years of collaborative research with the late Doug Coombs, the two-time World Extreme Skiing Champion and Chugach Mountain range heli skiing pioneer. The Apache Coomba is K2's serious alpinist powder ski, without the twitchy characteristics found in some experts-only skis. It features shaped tips and a progressive sidecut to provide predictable turning performance in variable snow conditions. The refined turn control and forgiving qualities make the Apache Coomba ideal for advanced skiers who are new to heli skiing and natural backcountry terrain. K2 balanced the flex pattern throughout the length of the Apache Coomba and gave it a 102-mm. waist for superb floatation in deep snow and better control in frozen crud. Doug Coombs and K2 gave the Apache Coomba a light and predictable fir wood core with a triaxially-braided, torsion box construction. K2's Mod Technology helps dampen vibration and minimizes ski chatter at speed on wind-scored glacier snow. K2 compares Mod Technology to shock absorbers in an off-road car. It's an "elastomeric secondary core" that's independent of the wood core that dampens vibrations without taking anything away from the overall ski flex.
